The Benefits of Cannabis for Epilepsy

Cannabis with a high content of Cannabidiol CBD have been found to help treat epilepsy in some patients. A certain type of epilepsy, called Dravet Syndrome has shown the most promising treatment with marijuana than other types of epilepsy. March 2004 – US National Library of Medicine - Endocannabinoid Effects on Febrile Seizures: Not Just a Toke(n) Mechanism
This study showed that in rats a febrile seizure lasting up to 22 minutes was regulated or terminated with cannabis from it's ability to inhibit GABA, a form of neurotransmitters, which also shows that the result of seizures relies in the increase of GABA being released.

May 2004 – US National Library of Medicine - Cannabinoids: Defending the Epileptic Brain

Edward Maa M.D, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Department of Neurology,is conducting a study at University of Colorado Anshutz Medical Campus on epilepsy research. The study will separate epilepsy sufferers in two groups of whether the Charlotte's Web strain reduces the epilepsy symptoms by 50% and another group that the symptoms are not helped by the cannabis strain. What Is PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD can develop after a trauma that can cause flashbacks, memory loss of the event, anxiety or hyper-arousal for over a month. Benefits of Cannabis for Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is mental disability where the person has inappropriate thoughts, emotions, behavior feelings and actions causing an altered reality of delusions and hallucinations. (Source) Studies have found a theory that the human endogenous cannabinoid system is a major source of the causes of schizophrenia. (Source) The endogenous cannabinoid system is responsible in the brain to trigger signals relating to appetite, the feeling of pain, mood and memory as well as regulating phychoactive effects by cannabis from the most notable CB1, CB2 and Anandamide receptors of the nervous system (Source).

Studies have shown promising benefits of Marijuana to relieve Schizophrenia symptoms. Cannabis should not be a replacement for prescribed drugs for the condition without talking to your physician. The Drug Enforement Agency DEA has categorized cannabis as a schedule 1 drug, research for cannabis is lacking and conclusive evidence for benefits of Schizophrenia is still in progress.(Source)

Markus Leweke of the University of Cologne in Germany conducted a study with 39 individuals with schizophrenia giving half cannabidiol (CBD) and the other half Amisulpride, an anti psychotic drug used for schizophrenia treatment. Cannabidiol is derived from the cannabis plant and is an antioxidant anti psycho-active part of the marijuana plant. The results showed that the symptoms equally went down for all subjects, with the people using cannabidiol (CBD) having less side effects. (Source)

Dr. Daniele Piomelli, professor of pharmacology at the University of California-Irvine has studied the anandamide receptors of the nervous system in the endogenous cannabinoid system. Dr. Piomellis theorizes with this study that cannabidiol CBD helps with schizophrenia by saying “What CBD seems to be doing is preventing anandamide from being destroyed”.(Source)

Raquel Levin and Fernanda F. Peres in Brazil did a study on mice with schizophrenia in which they gave Cannabidiol CBD to some mice and WIN55212,2 (synthetic cannabinoid agonist) to the other. Both were able to show positive results in improving sensory gating deficits. The results from the team were “Our results reinforce the role of the endocannabinoid system in the sensorimotor gating impairment related to schizophrenia, and point to cannabinoid drugs as potential therapeutic strategies.” (Source)

Future Studies

Currently, GW Pharmaceuticals is doing a study on their own GWP-42003 which is derived from cannabidiol CBD. They are doing the research in hopes of finding treatment with cannabis for schizophrenia. They have finished phase 1 and it shows promising results and they are now doing phase 2 (Source)

For medication to be introduced in the United States with cannabidiol CBD, it first needs to be FDA approved for study. The FDA has approved experimental use for CBD for the treatment of Dravet syndrome. Soon the FDA is set to allow it for clinical trials in showing safety and tolerability for CBD in children.(Source)

Indica and Sativa, what about Ruderalis?

Cannabis Species

Their are 3 predominant species of cannabis, Indica and Sativa that have been breed over generations to have a high THC content and predictable growing patterns, and Ruderalis, named after the German named “ruderal” meaning weeds by the roadside. Many in the cannabis growing community disregard the Ruderalis species, however it's high content of CBD as well as it's extremely fast growing time may come to be beneficial in the medical marijuana industry.

Ruderalis is thought to come from Sativa, having thin leaves much like the Sativa, but in contrast only growing a foot in height, while the Sativa is the tallest of the cannabis species. The origins are thought to be from Russian cannabis growers where the flowers that escaped outside the plantation seeded and started growing as volunteers. They adapted attributes to survive in the climate such as shorter in length and quicker growing time, losing the attributes that weren't helpful to survival such as high THC content. The ability for the ruderalis to flower without photo-activation makes it unique and necessary for the long days without sunlight in far north climates.

The Benefits of Cannabidiol (CBD)

Cannabis strains offer different amounts of Cannabidiol (CBD) doesn't affect the mind or psycho activity which is caused by the Tetrahydrocannabinol ( THC ) in cannabis. Cannabidiol has the widest use for medical applications than any other form of cannabis.
