Brotherhood of Eternal Love

At Outliers, we believe it is important to consider the history of our industry and recognize those individuals and groups who paved the way toward this credible treatment path. From the 1960's to the late 70's the Brotherhood of Eternal Love operated in Orange County California. Also known as the Hippie Mafia, they used, acquired and sold drugs. John Griggs originally started the group as a commune and by 1969 it had evolved into a group that made LSD and imported hashish.(Source)

The founders of the group started at the influence of Timothy Leary's book's and comments to “Turn on, tune in, drop out.” The group, first calling the members “the disciples” and organizing a non-profit religious group that believed that LSD\acid could be useful as a treatment for other addictions and there violent behavior and put them in an utopia state. (Source) They eventually set up a headshop in downtown Laguna beach 670 S. Pacific Coast Highway across from the Taco Bell that still stands their today called the Mystic Arts World. (Source)

The founders set up their “church” as a commune in a mountain town East of Orange County called Idyllwild in Modjeska Canyon. Their they wanted to tune out the world, aspire to have Timothy Leary be their leader and enjoy the exit from society. With the publicity of their organization, many people were afraid to visit in fear of incarceration. Also many members of the Brotherhood were smugglers and didn't attain for the solitude life, but instead more for the entrepreneurial aspect of the money made. (Source)

Some notable groups and people benefited from the Brotherhood of Eternal Love. Howard Mark's, or Mr. Nice smuggled for the group. In the late 60's the famous blond surfer from The Endless Summer, Mike Hynson, began to smuggle hashish from India back to Southern California by storing it in hollowed out surfboards.(Source)

In 1970 many people of the hippie movement were going to the Hawaiian island of Maui, and so did the Brotherhood of Eternal love. Loaded with a 1500 Kilos of Mexican weed, the Aafje Schooner was bought, loaded and put through the Panama Canal and then made it's way to Maui. This weed was the origination of the popular cannabis strain Maui Wowie.(Source) Hollowed surfboards packed with Maui Wowie made it's way back to the mainland.

On Christmas Day in 1970, a show was organized in Laguna Beach called “Laguna Beach on Acid” had an airplane dropped thousand of advertisements with a dose of Orange Sunshine LSD. At the time they were the nation's largest narcotics network. The proceeds of sales ended up funding to help Timothy Leary who had escaped from a jail in central California to help him flee to Kabul Afghanistan. (Source)

The Brotherhood of Eternal Love started to break down on August 5th, 1972 when raids in California, Oregon, and Maui, Afghanistan arrested 45 members. All being released a couple months later the group went underground or abroad. The last arrest was in 2009, and a book was published in 2010 by Nicholas Schou and a documentary called Orange Sunshine is out on Youtube. (Source)

In a speech by Nicholas Schou on youtube, he interviewed a member that said that his theory of that cocaine ended the brotherhood. The love and spirituality in this members opinion was ruined with the destruction of that vibe with cocaine and the desire to make money for drugs. (Source)

Mr. Nice Cannabis Strain, the Origin of the Name

Mr. Nice is a Cannabis Strain that OUTCO currently has in stock, an Indica that is a cross between a G13 and Hash Plant well known for it's potency. Patients describe it as heavy and strong with a mellow effect. People that use it recommend it to help with pain. G13 was taken off the market in the 80's but Sensei Seeds has brought it back as a cross naming it Mr. Nice. The name Mr. Nice comes from an autobiography of an infamous marijuana smuggler, Howard Marks. (Source)

The original G13 Strain came about when urban legend has it that a worker stole a cutting that was at a government research facility in Mississippi. Sensei Seeds paired it with the Hash Plant to enhance it's qualities and released it with the name Mr. Nice in 1999. These two heavyweights together many hail as the ultimate Indica hybrid.(Source) and (Source)

The colorful story of Mr. Nice, Howard Marks began in Oxford University when he sold Cannabis to his college friends. He came in contact with some bigger smugglers that sought after him to join them for his ability to be under the radar with the police and not having a criminal record. He was able to help them launder the money with his clean record.

A Gun Smuggler for the Irish Republican Army (IRA) was hired with his group to help smuggle cannabis into Ireland, which lead to the UK's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to contact him about helping their organization with drug producing countries and his connection with the IRA. He continued to broaden his smuggling by exporting to the United States to the Brotherhood of Eternal Love (a smuggling group of cannabis in Orange County). After the Little John Affair where another double agent with the MI6 and IRA was discovered, Howard Marks ceased his relationship with the MI6.

Howard Mark's writes about his career as a smuggler, where he had 43 aliases, one as Mr. Nice, a stolen passport from a convicted murderer Donald Nice:

"Between 1975 and 1978, twenty-four loads totaling 55,000 pounds of marijuana and hashish had been successfully imported through John F. Kennedy Airport, New York. They had involved the Mafia, the Yakuza, the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, the Thai army, the Palestine Liberation Organization, the Pakistani Armed Forces, Nepalese monks, and other individuals from all walks of life. The total profit made by all concerned was $48,000,000. They'd had a good run."

In 1988 Howard Marks along with his wife were arrested tipped off by many of his partners being arrested and giving tips. In 1990 Howard Marks was sentenced to 25 years and $50,000, and was released after 7 years for good behavior.

Howard Marks currently does book readings and is an activist for the legalization of marijuana. He published an Autobiography Mr. Nice in 1996 and has written other books along with appearing in movies and television shows. In 2010 the movie Mr. Nice was released which was a biography of Howard Mark's life.(Source)

Steve McWilliams and the Access to Medical Marijuana in San Diego

On November 5th, 1996 Proposition 215 was passed that made it legal to use marijuana for medical use. San Diego and San Bernardino Counties refused to uphold this law until they were forced to in 2009. The Supreme Court of California on May 19th in 2009 refused to prosecute medical marijuana users in San Diego and San Bernardino Counties. It took 7 years after Prop 215 to establish rules and regulations for medical marijuana use with California Senate Bill 420.(Source)

In 1997 Steve McWilliams who himself suffered with pain from multiple car crashes helped establish San Diego Cannabis Caregivers Club (SDCCC) in Ocean Beach, part of greater San Diego. They grew marijuana on the premisis as well as Valley Center giving access to marijuana to patients. In January 1998 Steve McWilliams was arrested for possesion but was released because of lack of information. Steve was transporting a plant to another patient when he got stopped at the border checkpoint, searched and was arrested.(Source) Steve McWilliams stated to the police that Proposition 215 was unclear to how to possess it for medicinal use. (Source) (Source)

On October 11, 2002 was arrested by the DEA for growing 6 marijuana plants, and he pled guilty to growing 25 plants. Charges were combined with a federal raid in 1999 on Shelter from the Storm Cannabis Collective that he helped organize where he was facing a minimum of a 5 year minimum prison sentence.(Source) This led to a plea deal and prison sentence for 6 months on April 28, 2003, which he was released on bail and ordered to not use marijuana. (Source) On July 11, 2005 Steve McWilliams committed Suicide on his 51st birthday. His suicide note stated:

"This was my last chance to help the medical marijuana movement and others that I care about," he further wrote "That's what so much of this has been about -- my right to use a medicine that worked for me." Steve McWilliams also mentioned displeasure with the opioid medication he was forced to use after the judge made the ruling that he could not use marijuana.

McWilliams was an advocate for medical marijuana and was a constantly attending the San Diego City Council Meetings. Known as the “Emperor of Hemp” he was a well known activist in the efforts to decriminalize cannabis. He is well known as the author of The Emporer Wears No Clothes, and was founder and served as director of Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP). Jack Herer made his presence at numerous Cannabis conventions, rallies and festivals, speaking to crowds and manning booths.(Source) He ran for the United States Presidency in 1988 and 1992 representing the Grassroots Party. (Source)

The Emperor Wears No Clothes
Supported by H.E.M.P America, Hanf Haus, the Texas Hemp Campaign, and Sensei Seeds offers $100,000 to anyone who can disprove the conclusions that the book The Emperor Wears No Clothes claims first published in 1985. Author Jack Herer claims that:

If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time... and that substance is -- the same one that did it all before -- Cannabis Hemp... Marijuana!”(Source)

Dr. Hayo M.G. Van der Werf criticizes the book in that hemp is not as exceptional as a high yield as other plants like corn, the production amounts can't be as large as explained in the book because it is not cost effective to transport it a long way and cellulose content of hemp % is wrong in the book.(Source)
The title of the book is an allegory of cannabis prohibition to The Emperor's New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen.(Source)

Famous Quotes From Jack Herer
Jack Herer as an activist for cannabis has a lot of poignant quotes to offer for the acceptance of cannabis in our society:

If you substitute marijuana for tobacco and alcohol, you'l add eight to 24 years to your life.”

Growing hemp as nature designed it is vital to our urgent need to reduce greenhouse gases and ensure the survival of our planet.”

But you can count the dead bodies from alcohol, tobacco, and legal pharmaceuticals by the millions.”

I don't want to wait 20 or 50 years for something to be done about petrochemical pollution.”

The only dead bodies from marijuana are in the prisons and at the hands of the police. This is ridiculous.”

Well, as I understand it, the main supporters are beer companies and the pharmaceutical companies. I'd like them to show me the dead bodies from marijuana. But they can't because there aren't any.”

You see, the Greenhouse Effect is a direct result of burning fossil or old carbon fuels.”

Rag paper, containing hemp fiber, is the highest quality and the longest lasting paper ever made. It can be torn when wet, but returns to full strength when dry.”

Many artists and writers have used cannabis for creative stimulation – from the writers of the world's religious masterpieces to our most irreverent satirists.”

I don't know if hemp's gonna save the world, but I'll tell you this... it's the only thing that can.”(Hemp Industries Association HIA)

Hemp will be the future of all mankind, or there won't be a future.”

Be a Warrior For Your Freedom.”(http://marijuanamemes.com/923/jack-herer-warrior-quote)
