How Cannabis Increasing Ceramide Helps Cancer Patients

A ceramide is a waxy lipid molecule found in cell membranes. It is found throughout the body, especially on the outer layer of skin. Ceramides help with cell differentiation, proliferation, and also aid in cell death. Marijuana, which increases ceramide, can be used to reduce cancer tumors.(Source)

Cannabis has been found to increase the messenger molecule anandamide, which induces the creation of ceramide. Using topical creams and ingesting marijuana has been shown to increase ceramide levels in the cells. Research has shown that an increase in ceramide allows cells with mitochondrial dysfunction or dysregulation to die. (Source) The ceramide disrupts the mitrochondria which releases cytochrome c and reactive oxygen into the cytosol, leading to cell death. The ceramide increase does not cause an apoptosis reaction in normal, healthy cells.(Source)
Our skin (or epidermis) has the highest concentration of ceramide. It maintains a barrier for the skin which slows environmental damage and retains moisture. Ceramide levels in the skin drop as we age. Signs of low ceramide include dry skin, wrinkles, and eczema.

Cannabis Increases Melatonin

In 1986, an Italian study found that marijuana dramatically increases melatonin. Research has shown a link between cancer prevention and melatonin therapies. (Source) Recently melatonin was discovered in bone marrow. As such, it has an additional benefit of increasing immunity.(Source)

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates bodily functions for timed events. For example, feeling sleepy at night and naturally waking up in the morning is regulated by melatonin. A decreased amount of melatonin can disrupt sleep and lead to insomnia. Melatonin also regulates blood pressure and influences the reproduction cycle.(Source)

When cannabis increases the prostaglandin PGE2 levels, it also increases your melatonin. The production of PGE2 stimulates a rise in melatonin levels in the body. The aforementioned Italian study found that the cannabinoid THC increased melatonin levels 20 minutes after consumption. After two hours of smoking cannabis, the melatonin levels were 4,000% higher than the baseline. (Source)

The Benefits of THCa

Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCa) is a cannabinoid found in raw marijuana. THCa begins to convert to THC while the cannabis flower is still on the plant. Therapeutic properties can be attributed to THCa including pain relief and reducing inflammation. The non-psychoactive effects allow patients to take at a higher dose for treatment.

Eating raw cannabis by juicing or tincture will provide ample amounts of THCa. Lab results of the flowers containing THC actually show how much THCa will be converted to THC when heated. Generally, the THCa consists of 5-25% of the marijuana plant itself.

Studies have shown that THCa has anti-inflammatory properties that can help arthritis, multiple sclerosis, pain, and gastrointestinal problems. (Source) Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid can improve and reduce the effects of neurodegenerative disease. (Source) The antiemetic properties in THCa also helps patients with HIV\Aids and cancer. (Source) And finally, research has shown that THCa can slow or stop cancer growth in the prostate. (Source)

Rick Simpson Oil

Rick Simpson Oil Cancer treatment
Rick Simpson Oil

Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) is named after the developer of the famous product. Rick Simpson created the oil to cure his cancer. Many others have cited the nutrient rich oil as a cure for their own cancer.(Source)

A full spectrum of cannabinoids are present in Rick Simpson Oil, most notably THC. The benefits of the cannabinoids together give different medicinal effects than CBD Oil. (Source) Also named Phoenix Tears, RSO is made from a recipe that is available on Rick Simpson's website. The oil uses Indica strain flowers, so the color varies with each batch. Patients can ingest the oil or apply it directly on the skin for targeted relief.

When starting out with RSO, ingest a small amount (approx. the size of a grain of rice). The oil is very potent and should only be used when you’re not working or driving. Once you start your treatment, you will build a tolerance - with time, you will be able to take more RSO in a single dose. (Source)

The Cannabis Terpene Alpha Pinene

Alpha Pinene is the most common terpene in the plant world and also found in cannabis. Other plants such as basil, dill, parsley, pine needles, and rosemary are rich in α-pinene . Some of the cannabis strains that offer the most alpha pinene terpene are Bubba Kush, Chemdawg, Jack Herer, Super Silver Haze and Trainwreck.

Terepenes offer medicinal effects when consumed or used topically. Terepenes have shown to help in the biosynthesis for CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system.(Source) Alpha pinene works synergistically with THC to help regulate the psychosis effects when consuming cannabis.(Source) Alpha pinene is an organic compound offering medicinal value for many applications.

Alpha pinene has shown to give anti-inflammatory properties(Source). This allows for uses in arthritis, celiac disease, crohn's disease, joint pain and multiple sclerosis where a reduction in inflammation can aid in pain relief. Memory retention is increased with alpha pinene for it's ability to inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain.(Source)

Currently research is being conducted to show the benefits of alpha pinene slowing cancer tumor growth. A 2013 study showed how cancer cells were reduced with pinene on neurblastoma cells.(Source) A 2014 study using an anti-tumor drug concluded that pinene mitigated hepatoma carcinoma.(Source)

Many patients seek cannabis strains high in alpha pinene for it's benefits in asthma treatment and infections. Pinene has shown to be a bronchodilator. It helps to open the airways of the upper respiratory system.(Source) Pinene also has been found to be anti-microbial with the ability to treat bacteria as well as virus infections. Certain bacteria infections have shown positive results with pinene. Pinene has also been found to treat the infectious bronchitis virus. This virus is much harder to treat than bacterial infections.(Source)

The Benefits of Medical Marijuana and Bone Cancer

Over 50% of people that have cancer suffer from chronic pain. Studies show a higher percentage of bone cancer patients suffer from pain.(Source)

Bone Cancer can result in a lot of pain. In a recent study on mice and humans it was found that cannabinoids found in cannabis reduce pain caused by C-fiber nociceptors, CB2 Receptors(Source) and WIN-55(Source). They react to slow down the pain signals going to the brain giving relief to the pain.(Source) A low dose cannabis treatment can mitigate the pain associated with bone cancer.(Source)

The effect of the CB2 receptors from cannabis treatment has shown to reduce bone loss and fracturing.(Source) The receptors increase bone cell renewal and reduce bone resorption. Marijuana has shown to increase bone density and reduce osteoporosis to keep bones healthy.(Source)

Many cancer patients describe the cannabis application of Rick Simpson Oil or also known as Phoenix Tears to help and cure their cancer and reduce pain. Rick Simpson created his own cannabis oil by slow boiling the whole plant to get a concentrated form of cannabinoid oil. It can be taken orally in drops under the tongue or applied topically to the area of pain or cancer. Many patients have cured their cancer and attributed it to Rick Simpson Oil.

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong Urges for Safe Dispensing of Medical Marijuana

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shion is an American surgeon, medical researcher, and a professor at UCLA. He is the wealthiest person in the American health care industry. His impact in the medical world is due to a revolutionary approach to curing cancer.(Source)

Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently interviewed him on 60 minutes. During this interview he said “Cancer is not cells growing, it's the inability of the cells to die”. His research focuses on mutations in cells versus traditional cancer treatment that target specific areas. (Source)

Dr. Soon-Shion is impatient with the slow rate of FDA approval. He can afford to be outspoken because of his wealth to fund his research without big pharma or the government backing. This allows him to speak and think freely about health care and medical marijuana. Soon-Shion says “Medical Marijuana has a real chemical positive effect”. He states it helps with the brain and nausea. He warns about the bad quality and impurities from poorly run distribution.(Source)

San Diego is leading it's region in setting up safe medical marijuana dispensaries. All medication by legally licensed dispensaries are regulated by San Diego county. They must adhere to strict testing for quality and lack of impurities. Outliers Collective is the first and only dispensary in San Diego County to be licensed. OUTCO can offer a permanent location, safety of medicine and pay taxes to benefit the community.

5 Benefits for Marijuana over Opiates to Treat Pain

More than 1.5 billion people suffer from chronic pain and approximately 4% suffer from neuropathic pain worldwide.(Source) Opiates are the most common prescribed medication for pain in the United States. Research has shown that the success rate of opiates for treating pain is 30-40% with horrible side effects.(Source) In 2007 prescription pain killers contributed to 42% of all drug deaths in America.(Source) Research has shown that Cannabis is a favorable alternative to opiate pain medication.

Benefit #1 Cannabis Treats your Emotional Response to Pain

In 2010 Oxford University conducted a study on how pain is perceived. In the study volunteers were told if electric charges would be dangerous or not before they received them. The perception of danger made the charges more painful. The brain felt pain before the charge was administered.(Source)
Cannabis relaxes the emotional response by affecting the brain receptors that deal with emotion.

Benefit #2 Cannabis Reduces Cancer Growth

Many studies have shown that marijuana lowers cancer cell growth.(Source) In 2012 the University of Chicago put out a report to showing that opiates may increase cancer growth. Jonathan Moss, MD, PhD, professor of anesthesiology and critical care at the University of Chicago Medicine said "Epidemiologic findings suggest that the type of anesthesia we do for cancer surgery influences recurrence rate, and laboratory studies demonstrate that opioids influence tumor progression and metastasis,". In another study, cancer cells in the lungs show 5-10 times as many opiod receptors than non-cancer cells.(Source)

Benefit #3 Cannabis is Less Addictive than Opiates

A study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) found that 9% of cannabis users have an addiction problem.(Source) To put this in perspective, 8% of Americans are addicted to Facebook, checking their account 11 or more times a day.(Source) Heroin is an opiate that has a 23% abuse rate.(Source) In 2010 two million people reported using prescription painkillers for non-medical reasons in a one year period (5,500 a day).(Source)

Benefit #4 Cannabis Reduces Side Effects that Opiates Have

Opiates are Central Nervous System (CNS) Depressants. If the CNS is overly-depressed too far this can result in difficulty with the heart beating or the ability to breathe.(Source) Other side effects include hormonal imbalance, constipation, nausea, and drowsiness.(Source) Studies have found that using cannabis along with opiates reduces side effects and decreases addiction.(Source)

Benefit #5 Cannabis Overdose Deaths = 0

There have been no reported overdose deaths for marijuana. (Source) In 2010 the number of opiate overdose deaths were 16,651. Six percent of people who use prescribed opiates use it as a gateway drug for heroin use. (Source) In 2012 the opioid heroin use resulted in 5,925 deaths as a result of overdose.

The Benefits of Cannabigerol (CBG)

Cannabigerol CBG is a cannabinoid in marijuana that has medicinal properties. Found in low concentrations in many strains of cannabis it is often overlooked. CBG works in conjunction with THC to tone down the paranoia feeling.(Source) Alone it aids in treatment to depression, tumors, inflammatory bowel disease, glaucoma, bacteria infections, high blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, anxiety and muscle tension.

Research has proven many treatments from Cannabigerol. Here is a list of the numerous benefits of CBG:

Depression: GW Pharma has a patent for the use of Cannabigerol CBG to treat clinical depression.(Source)

Cancer \Tumors: New research this year has shown that CBG reduces cancer cells and tumors in the colon.(Source)

Inflammatory Bowel Disease: CBG reduced inflammation and over-production of nitric oxide which can lead to sustained IBD.(Source)

Glaucoma: CBG shows promising treatment for glaucoma by relieving ocular pressure. More importantly CBG showed 2-3 times the benefit of eye drainage than other medicines.(Source)

Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections have been treated including MRSA.(Source)

Reduce Heart Rate and Blood Clotting: Has shown as a proven treatment for the way it reduces platelet aggregation.(Source)

Anxiety and Muscle Tension: CBG is able to treate with it's ability to inhibit GABA production.(Source)

Cannabis initially starts with creating cannabinoid cannabigerolic acid (CBGa). This is typically broken down with exposure to air and UV light into THCa, CBDa or CBCa. If it remains as CBGa, then it will convert to CBG when heated. Some industrial strains retain the CBGa with as much as a 94% concentration. It is thought this strain has a recessive gene that doesn't allow the conversion to the THCa, CBDa or CBCa. Currently some growers are using this knowledge to create strains rich in CBG like the Mickey Kush Strain.

What is 2-AG and Does it Relate to Cannabis?

2-Arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) is the most abundant endocannaboinoid messenger molecule that effects the TRPV1, CB1 and CB2 receptor. 2-AG is 170 times the concentration of anandamide which also effects the same receptors. 2-AG is naturally created in humans and also found in human and cattle milk. (Source)

So why does this matter? Because 2-AG and anandamide is created on-demand naturally by the body, and an imbalance to the body to produce too much or little is thought to lead to disorders. Drug therapies that target the CB1, CB2 receptors bring the body back to a balance where 2-AG is lacking.(Source) It is theorized that diseases such as bipolar(Source) and alzheimer's(Source) could occur from an imbalance of 2-AG being created in the body.

The nerve cells affected by 2-AG control body temperature, appetite, memory, mood, inflammation, immunity and the sensation of heat and pain. Studies show that it may inhibit cancer cell formation. 2-AG is created from 20-carbon essential fatty acids (EFA). Cannabis is a good source of EFA's that mimics 2-AG functions.(Source)

Cannabis drug therapies have been developed to treat symptoms of many problems by mimicking the 2-AG messenger molecule. Some examples of treatment are for memory, pain, nausea, wasting syndrome, cancer, spasticity from multiple sclerosis and tremors from Parkinson's disease.

2-AG plays an important role in traumatic brain injuries. When a brain injury occurs 2-AG has been found to be elevated. A study with mice was done where they gave a drug to boost the levels of 2-AG after a brain injury. The results were a quicker recovery, reduced inflammation, swelling and brain cell death.(Source)

Essential Fatty Acids in Cannabis

Cannabis in the form of hemp seeds holds forty-four percent of it's weight in edible oils.  These oils comprise eighty percent of essential fatty acids (EFAs) which include Linoleic Acid (55%), Alpha-Linolenic Acid - Omega-3 (22%), Gamma-Linolenic Acid - Omega-6 (1-4%) and Stearidonic Acid - Omega -3 (0-2%)(Source). Cannabis derived from flowers has been found to include many fatty acids including palmitic, myristic, oleic and stearic acids. (Source)

Omega 3 Fatty Acids in plant form have been found to help with arthritis, depression, infant development, asthma, ADHD, Alzheimer's and Dementia. These acids have been shown to act primarily as an anti-inflammatory agent.(Source) Studies have also shown that an increased diet including Omega 3 fatty acids helps to reduce ADHD symptoms.

Omega 6 fatty acids, also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), have been shown to help with brain function, growth and development, skin and hair growth, metabolism regulation, bone health and the functions of the reproductive system. (Source) A diet with higher levels of Omega 3's vs. Omega 6 has been shown to be healthiest overall. However Omega 6 acids have been found to help with specific health  problems which may not be addressed solely through a diet including use of Omega 6 acids. Linolenic Acid (GLA) has been shown to help with nerve pain in people with diabetic neuropathy or arthritis. Studies have shown more allergies in woman with low GLA in breast milk or blood. GLA has been shown to help with a breast cancer drug tamoxifen and help inhibit tumor activity. (Source)

Cannabis is a nutritious food source that offers essential fatty acids, all 9 essential amino acids and 65% of globulin edistin.

Cannabis and the Type 1 Vanilloid Receptor

TRPV1 also known as Type 1 Vanilloid Receptor, Capsaicin Receptor and transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member1 is a protein that the TRPV1 gene encodes. This receptor regulates body temperature and the sensation of heat and pain. Found in the nervous system it is a communicator of pain to the brain, and desensitizing gives a analgesic pain free feeling.
Cannabinoids found in marijuana have been found to be an antagonist to the TRPV1 receptor, which can help with neurpathic pain, multiple sclerosis, chemotherapy, amputation as well as osteoarthritis, anxiety and long term depression.(Source) Cannabidiol CBD has shown to have an activation of the TRPV1 receptors. (Source) Endocannabinoid anandamide that is affected by the use of cannabis has been shown to act on the TRPV1 receptors as well. (Source) Dopamine which is increased with cannabis use also effects the TRPV1 receptor.(Source)

Along with treatment in symptoms, cannabis can reduce cancer to it's role in the TRPV1 receptor. Neuroblastoma is a cancer started in the nervous system in the human fetus or embryo that resides in the nervous system. This form of cancer is usually seen in young children before the age of 10. Research has shown that cannabis can delay or stop the cancer cell growth of neuroblastoma by activating the TRPV1 receptors. (Source)

Cannabis Reduces Brain Tumors

Cannabinoids found in marijuana have shown to inhibit tumor cell growth. This is achieved in how they effect signaling pathways in the brain. Treatment with cannabis has been found to be cheaper to produce and have less side effects and toxicity to other conventional chemo therapies and drugs, encouraging further research to make it a mainstream medicine.(Source)

In 1998 it was first recorded that delta-9-THC promoted cell death in glioma (brain tumor) cells in cultures.(Source) In 2000 a study was done with THC as well as WIN 55,212-2 which is a chemical that shows effects similar to cannabinoids, with a completley different chemical structure. Both increased ceramides which inhibited cancer cell growth.(Source) Ceramides are fatty acids that tumor cells seem to invite in. Ceramides communicate with the lysosomes in the cells to tell them to burst, killing the cancer cell. Ceramides are also important in hair and skin acting as a protective shield against the environment.(Source)

A study in 2003 found that THC in laboratory tests create cell destruction in cells by modifying the signal pathways inside the tumor, allowing it to disrupt growth or kill the tumor. (Source) With much discussion about THC benefiting tumor cell death, research also concluded that the cannabinoid CBD also showed equally promising results in tumor cell death without the psycho active properties. (Source)

In 2004 it was found that cannabinoids reduce tumor growth by affecting the vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF, or the function of giving blood supply to tissue when circulation is inadequate. The blocking of the pathway to blood flow of tumors showed a reduction in the tumor cells. (Source)
In 2005 a study found that THC did a better job of only inhibiting the growth of tumor cells as opposed to healthy cells more effectively than the chemical medicine WIN 55,212-2. (Source)

Professor Guzman who conducted a lot of these research studies found in 2006 that patients with reoccuring glioblastoma multiforme showed a reduction in tumors. (Source) In 2010 it was found in research that a widely used chemotherapy drug used to treat brain tumors called temozolomide (TMZ) increased effectiveness when administered with THC. (Source) A report was published in 2011 in which two children using cannabis to treat cerebellar and optic pathway tumors by inhibiting the growth effectively.(Source)

In 2014 glioma, an aggressive and hard to treat cancer in the brain was treated with CBD and THC along with radiotherapy. Results found that the combination of the cannabinoids found in marijuana improved the radiotherapy by prepping the glioma cells to receive the ionizing radiation more effectively and reducing the tumor cells.(Source)

Cannabis and Pain Management

One hundred million Americans suffer from chronic pain.(Source) Three to four percent of the global population suffer from neuropathic pain. (Source) Pain contributes to feeling depressed, concentration, energy level, ability to sleep well and enjoyment of life. (Source) Cannabis has been found to be an effective treatment in neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and pain from cancer. Cannabis has been found to be safer with less side effects than opiate medication.(Source)

Cannabis has been found to effectively relieve neuropathic pain. Both Cannabis and Opiates target the G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). These receptors effect the Central Nervous System CNS using the CB1 and CB2 Receptors, which effect pain-sensation, and mood notably. (Source)

Fibromyalgia is a muscleskeletal pain resulting in fatigue and pain in the neck, spine, shoulder and hips. Three to six million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia. In 2006, a study in Germany giving THC to patients showed a significant relief in symptoms. A study in 2008 with 40 patients gave a synthetic cannabinoid and showed significant improvements in pain. And in 2011 a study in Barcelona and the patients reported significant relief in pain, stiffness, relaxation, somnolence and feeling of well-being.(Source)

Cannabis has been found in studies in Australia and Britain showed that 20% of patients suffering from Rheumatoid Arthrites (RA) used medical marijuana to help treat their symptoms.(Source) Cannabis is an anti-inflammatory and helps to turn off pain-sensations in the nerves from the interactions it has with CB1 and CB2 Receptors. Results in a study in Britain showed that their were significant improvements in pain, sleep and inflammation.(Source) Cannabidiol CBD found in marijuana has shown to stop the progression of Rheumatoid Arthritis and protected joints. (Source)

A research study showed that advanced cancer patients were able to reduce their pain by 30% using a THC:CBD extract. In the study, with 177 patients, opiate medications did not provide the necessary relief. The placebo and THC alone had similar results to the opiate medication where the THC:CBD cannabis extract showed a noticeable relief in pain.(Source)

Cannabis has been found to have less side effects than opiate medication. A study has found that states that have legal medical marijuana has less mortality rates due to overdose in pain medication. (Source) Cannabis has been found to help patients addicted to opiate drugs withdraw from addiction by replacing with medical marijuana, and perceived to help pain more.(Source) Pain sufferers that have achieved a tolerance with opiate medication can feel a better relief by replacing treatment with cannabis.(Source) Cannabis can be used with opioid therapies to help lower the dose of opiates, thereby reducing their side effects. Marijuana and Nausea

Cannabis has been found to be an effective treatment to reduce nausea and vomiting while also stimulating appetites. Studies have shown that this effect can help with treatment for cancer and AIDS patients who suffer from weight loss and nausea due to treatment.

Patients describe smoking marijuana as a far better treatment for nausea than ingesting Cannabis orally. Most patients consume marijuana with an unfiltered joint or a vaporizer pen to receive the benefits. Marijuana has also been found effective to treat nausea where other antiemetic medications have shown not to work.(Source)

In 1999 an article titled Marijuana and Medicine by Joy, Watson and Benson studied the benefits in delivery systems of cannabis. The research was for showing the effectiveness of reduction in nausea, vomiting and AIDS wasting syndrome. Data was from 6 states using 748 that smoked marijuana and 345 that took oral THC capsules. The results were that smoking gave a 70-100% benefit in reducing nausea, vomiting and AIDS wasting syndrome, with 76-88% releif in patients who took the oral capsule.(Source)

A clinical year long study in 2003 showed that when THC, or dronabinol was taken in a long term treatment from 3 months to a year, it significantly improves appetite and reverses weight loss for patients with HIV/AIDS. 117 patients in the survey 63% maintained or gained weight, appetite increased 45% after one month and nausea decreased consistently. This study showed that cannabis shows a more conclusive effect when taken for three months or longer.(Source)

A study in 2001 with 1366 patients administered oral Dronibol (THC), oral nabilone(synthetic cannabinoid) and intramuscular levonantradol, no cannabis was smoked. The cannabinoids were more effective as anti-nausea (antiemetics) than prochlorperazine, metoclopramide, chlorpromazine, thiethylperazine, haloperidol, domperidone, or alizapride.(Source)

In 1988 published in the New York State Journal of Medicine a study of 56 patients of cancer chemotherapy showed a 78% improvement in smoking marijuana. This was based on the
degree of nausea, vomiting, food intake, physical state, and over-all mood.(Source)

A study in 2001 studied 13 patients with marijuana cigarettes, placebo and a anitemetic drug Ondansetron. Marijuana was shown to reduce queasiness and vomitting effectively with the drug Ondansetron.(Source)

In 2005 a study done with 252 patients from JAIDS Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, studies the effectiveness of marijuana helping nausea with AIDS patients using antiretroviral therapy (ART). The findings found that other illicit impede ART drugs, but marijuana helps to facilitate ART drugs.(Source)

A study in 2007 compared the oral intake of cannabis Dronabinol, smoked marijuana and placebo showed substantial increases in food intake with both smoked and oral cannabis. Through the result many reported intoxication's, but it was a good drug effect with little discomfort.(Source)

In 2010 a study with 21 adult advanced cancer patients showed an improvement with THC in food intake, appetite, and enhanced perception of food tasting better.(Source)
